“ROAD SAFETY DEBATES TO PROMOTE EDUCATION AMONGST LEARNERS”

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) in partnership with BP South Africa and Free State Provincial Government will be hosting the National Road Safety Debates as part of RTMC’s pedestrian safety strategy. The Debates details are as follows:
Date: 08 - 10 September 2009
Venue: Bains Game Lodge, Bloemfontein.
The debate competition is aimed at encouraging learners to be aware of road safety issues and to empower them with practical research skills.
This prominent educational project commences at the school level and only best learners take part in the national competition. Major topics of discussion during this year’s debates include, amongst others:
- The introduction of Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (AARTO) and demerit system is the solution to curbing lawlessness on our roads;
- Education is the key to people respecting seatbelts laws in SA;
- Young novice drivers are responsible for high crash rates in SA
All the provinces are represented by five (5) learners and one (1) educator. Last year’s competition was a success with a top prize winner from Gauteng Province.
This debate competition is the component of the 2015 Road Safety Management Strategy that RTMC has developed in partnership with road safety role players in the provinces.
